Not content with a mere billion, Minecraft starts racking up more sales this week when it is released as a downloadable on Xbox One – and perhaps PS4 too. Mojang’s sandbox video game is scheduled to be released on September 5, 2015. 360 owners can upgrade to the Xbox One for $5/PS4. Microsoft notes that this upgrade is available regardless of whether you own discs or a download copy. The full price version is $20/PS16.

While the PS4 date isn’t known Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan tweeted that “Sony friends” are likely to get a “Minecraft surprise very soon… or perhaps sooner?!” The teaser was released after a PlayStation France tweet claimed that the PS4 version would be out today. However, no other Sony channels have confirmed this. We’ll notify everyone as soon as we learn of a release date for the PS4 version.

Update: The PlayStation 4 version Minecraft seems to have been launched in Europe. There’s no confirmation on when the game will reach North America or other territories. [Image: 4J Studios]

In the case of the Vita version, it looks likely to be released this week. Last week , the team responsible for porting 4J Studios said it had “more work to do” before submitting the Vita build to Sony for certification.

The latest Minecraft versions include Minecraft worlds that are up to 36 times larger than the last-generation version. They also have greater draw distances. Additionally, PS3 and Xbox 360 owners can import their Minecraft worlds into the PS4 and Xbox One versions respectively.

The announcement is coming in the same week that Mojang released Minecraft 1.8 on PC the update that’s been in development for the longest at the Swedish studio and has been in development for 300 days. It’s not a surprise that it’s a an enormous update, bringing many changes you can browse through here. Highlights include new Guardian and Endermite mobs that are balanced by the introduction of d’awww rabbits. There are also killer rabbits that aren’t as d’awww but still quite d’awww.
